The Student Volunteer Army is a charitable trust that builds community capacity by supporting volunteers to help their communities in everyday life and in times of crisis. We recognise that fostering a 'volunteer identity' is a prerequisite for engagement, which is why our model centres on recognition. Volunteering is the practical tool we use to build capability, connection, and a lasting
culture of service.

Our work began in 2011 following the Christchurch earthquake, when founder Sam Johnson mobilised 11,000 volunteers to support the city’s recovery. That rapid, community-led response became the first Student Volunteer Army and continues to shape our approach.

Today, Student Volunteer Army works with around 50,000 young people each year across 250 schools, 7 universities, and community settings, recognising and supporting volunteers of all abilities, including those living with intellectual disabilities. Our focus is on valuing service and helping volunteers feel ready to show up and help when someone needs them. Alongside this, we mobilise volunteers during disasters and support communities to coordinate
effective responses. Through simple tools, trusted relationships, and national coordination, we maintain a ready volunteer network that can respond quickly and at scale across Aotearoa New Zealand.
