Mary's earlier career includes leadership positions at MedImpact Healthcare Systems, where Mary developed specialty pharmacy solutions, and Cardinal Health, where Mary participated in a leadership development program. Academically, Mary holds a Master of Science in Health Communication from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, an Executive Women in Leadership Certificate from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
