Following this, they pursued a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Chemistry at Utrecht University, which they obtained between 1984 and 1989. Willem then continued at Utrecht University to earn their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Chemistry, which they completed from 1989 to 1993.
