Tim Schnabel

Founder & CEO & Director at Switch Bioworks

Tim Schnabel is the Founder & CEO of Switch Bioworks and a leading innovator in the field of biotechnology. Tim has dedicated their career to developing new technologies that can have a transformative impact on society.

After completing their undergraduate studies at Stanford University, Tim worked in the Protein Engineering Lab where they developed oxygen tolerant hydrogenase enzymes for use in renewable hydrogen fuel production. Tim also invented a high-throughput assay to screen mutant enzyme libraries for hydrogen production under selection pressures such as oxygen. Their work led to a US Provisional Patent and the publication of their first scientific paper.

In 2015, Tim became an Entrepreneur in Residence at Stanford Bioengineering, where they explored the translational potential of engineered ammonia producing microbes by adapting their circuitry for switchable ammonia production in the field. Tim also worked on scaling their techno-economics to revolutionize agriculture. This work led to the founding of Switch Bioworks.

Tim has also interned at DuPont in their Analytical Biotechnology department, where they gained valuable experience in the industrial application of biotechnology.

Tim is a leading voice in the biotechnology industry, and their work is having a transformative impact on the world.

Dr. Tim Schnabel has a PhD in Bioengineering from Stanford University, as well as a Master of Science in the same field from the same school. Tim also holds a Bachelor of Science with Honors and Distinction in Chemical Engineering and Economics from Stanford University. Dr. Schnabel also has an International Baccalaureate Diploma from the International School Hannover Region, where they graduated with a GPA of 4.20.
