The SWM brand was founded in Italy in 1971. Shineray Holdings made the purchase of SWM in 2014. In 2016, Brilliance Shineray Chongqing Automobile Co., Ltd. of Shineray Holdings formally incorporated SWM into the new passenger vehicle brand: SWM Motors .

SWM Motors respectively established its Design Center and R&D Center in Milan, Italy and Chongqing (China). SWM Motors built a headquarters in Fuling District, Chongqing, with an annual production of 300,000 complete vehicles and 300,000 engines.

As of October 2023, it has been serving in Turkey with the assurance of ATMO Group.
