Mat Gilbert

Director Of Software Engineering at Synapse Product Development

Mat Gilbert has a diverse work experience in the fields of software engineering, engineering and operations, and research and development. Mat is currently the Director of Software Engineering at Synapse Product Development since September 2022. Prior to this, they worked at Cambridge Consultants from November 2019 to September 2022 as the Director of Engineering and Operations, from July 2016 to November 2019 as the Wireless Software Group Leader, and from August 2013 to July 2016 as a Senior Engineer, Wireless Software. Before Cambridge Consultants, Mat worked at the University of York, where they held various roles including Contract Engineer from October 2012 to March 2013, Postgraduate Demonstrator from September 2008 to March 2013, and PhD Researcher from August 2008 to January 2013. Their research focused on designing and implementing a treadmill-based system for stroke patient rehabilitation. Additionally, Mat worked at MedTred as a Lead Developer from July 2008 to July 2011, where they led a team of engineers in commercializing their PhD research system. Mat started their career as a Systems Engineering Intern at Broadcom from July 2006 to July 2007, where they were responsible for hardware projects and managing the company's component supply chain.

Mat Gilbert obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the University of York, having studied from 2004 to 2008. Afterward, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the same university between 2008 and 2013. Their doctoral research focused on optimizing visuo-locomotor interactions in a motion-capture virtual reality rehabilitation system.
