Gary Phillips has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Gary started their career at Ciba Pharmaceuticals UK in 1981, where they worked on special projects until 1992. Gary then joined Novartis Asia Pacific, initially as Managing Director from 1992 to 1998, and later as Country Area Manager from 1998 to 2000. In 2001, they became the CEO of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Australia Pty, a position they held until 2003. Gary then moved on to become the Commercial Director at Pharmaxis from 2003 to 2008, followed by the role of Chief Operating Officer from 2008 to 2013. Eventually, in 2013, they became the Chief Executive Officer of Pharmaxis.

Gary Phillips completed the Company Directors Course and graduated as a GAICD from the Australian Institute of Company Directors in 2017. Prior to that, they obtained an MBA from Henley Business School from 1990 to 1992. Gary also attended the University of Nottingham from 1978 to 1981, where they studied Pharmacy. Before their university education, Gary Phillips attended Bristol Cathedral School from 1970 to 1978.
