Joseph O’Sullivan is a senior principal with Syska Hennessy Group, and he leads the firm’s Chicago office along with the Central and Southeast regions. He is also a key member of the firm’s operations team. Joe is a licensed professional engineer in six states and a LEED Accredited Professional.
Joe began his career with Syska in 1997 as an intern in the New York Office and was hired as a junior engineer in 1998. His subsequent roles included mechanical engineer and project manager. During these years, he developed a reputation for cultivating client relationships and successfully managing technically advanced, mission-critical projects that contributed to the growth of the firm’s critical facilities practice.
In 2007, Joe moved to Chicago to help lead the Syska’s expansion into the Midwest market with the opening of the Chicago office. His leadership and dedication have resulted in significant business and staff growth. Today, 50 employees are based in Chicago. In 2015, Joe assumed responsibility of the Central region, and in 2020, he added the role of co-leader of the Southeast region.
Joe’s additional achievements during his tenure include the creation of an employee resource group known as Syska Employee Network of Support and Education (SENSE). He initiated a partnership between SENSE and KaTO Design with the objective of making meaningful impact in regions worldwide that desperately need help.
Joe also oversees Syska’s Engineering Development Training (EDT) program, and he is a co-author of Syska’s Vision 2025, a strategic visioning platform to help ensure a strong and vibrant future for the firm.
In addition to his other responsibilities, Joe leads the Chicago office’s participation on professional association boards, including the ACE Mentor Program of America, Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network, 7×24 Exchange International, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). He is an active member on the City of Hope Chicago Real Estate and Construction Council and in 2019 was honored with the Council’s Spirit of Life award.
