Jonathan Staples has a diverse work experience in the cybersecurity and intelligence fields. Jonathan is currently employed at Target as a Principal Cybersecurity Analyst since November 2021, previously serving as the Lead Cybersecurity Analyst from September 2016 to November 2021. Prior to that, they worked at Booz Allen Hamilton as a Cyber Threat Analyst, Software Configuration Manager, and Software Test Engineer from 2012 to 2016. Jonathan also gained experience as a Principal Instructor - Counterintelligence at General Dynamics Information Technology from 2011 to 2012, and as a Senior Counterintelligence Agent at L-3 Communications from 2009 to 2010. Before entering the private sector, Jonathan served in the US Army as a Counterintelligence Agent from 1997 to 2006, with deployments to Bosnia in 2001 and 2004.

Jonathan Staples has a Master of Science (MS) degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, which they obtained from Grand Canyon University in 2016. Prior to that, they received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Intelligence Studies from American Military University in 2014. In 2006, they obtained a Diploma with Honors in Arabic Language and Literature from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Jonathan also holds various certifications, including being a Splunk Power User, a Certified International Configuration Manager, a Certified International Software Configuration Manager, and an ISTQB Certified Tester, Foundation Level.
