La estación fue fundada oficialmente el 28 de marzo de 1954 por Ángel Ramos, propietario del periódico principal de Puerto Rico en ese entonces, El Mundo y de la primera estación de radio de Puerto Rico y tercera estación de radio a nivel mundial-, WKAQ, siendo la primera estación en el país en trasmitir señal de televisión. 

Telemundo Puerto Rico fue la primera y la estación original de lo que hoy conocemos como Telemundo Network. una división de Empresas y Contenido en español de NBCUniversal para el mercado Hispano de EEUU y Puerto Rico
