John Cheek has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. John currently holds the position of Vice President, Intellectual Property & Legal Operations, and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel at Tenneco Inc. In this role, they have responsibility for all intellectual property business and policy matters, legal matters related to intellectual property, technology, brands, and innovation, as well as various aspects of compliance, securities, and corporate governance activities.
Prior to their current position, John has held various roles in different organizations, including being a Managing Attorney for Intellectual Property Conflicts & Patent Analytics, Managing Intellectual Property Attorney in Europe, and an Intellectual Property Attorney at Caterpillar Inc. John has led teams responsible for protecting innovation, overseeing IP legal support, and managing patent disputes and agreements. Additionally, they have undertaken leadership roles in legislative and lobbying activities and served as the Past President of the Association of Corporate Patent Counsel.
John has also been involved in the academic field, serving as an MBA Program Guest Lecturer at the Kellogg School of Management. Furthermore, they have contributed their expertise as a board member and executive committee member on the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) and the IPO Education Foundation.
Apart from their professional endeavors, John has also been actively engaged in public service, serving as Vice President and Chair of the Governance Committee for Prairie State Legal Services Inc., a legal aid organization supporting the underprivileged in Illinois.
John Cheek began their career as an Intellectual Property Attorney at Dybivg & Dybvig. Prior to that, they served as a Law Clerk at Thompson Hine & Flory and a Software Test Engineer at LexisNexis.
John Cheek has an education history that includes an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, with a focus on Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship, which they completed from 1999 to 2005. John also earned a JD from the University of Dayton School of Law, specializing in Law & Technology, from 1991 to 1994. In addition, they obtained an AB degree in Mathematics and Economics from Wabash College, completing their studies from 1987 to 1991. John also participated in an MBA International Exchange Program at the University of Warwick - Warwick Business School. John'sundergraduate studies include Mechanical Engineering at Bradley University from 1997 to 1999 and Physics at the University of Dayton from 1992 to 1994.
