Graduated in Economics and Social Sciences at the Bocconi University in Milan, Renato Soru worked in Milan for CBI Merchant from 1985 to 1990 as a broker in stocks and financial by-products. In 1994 he started Czech On Line, the first company to offer commercial Internet services in the Czech Republic. Over the years, the company developed its presence throughout the country and was later acquired by Telekom Austria.
In 1998, following the liberalisation of the Italian telecommunications market, he founded Tiscali, which grew very rapidly to become one of the largest Internet service operators in Europe in 2003.
In 2004 he left his business as an entrepreneur to engage in politics and was elected President of the Sardinia Region, a position he held until December 2008.
At the end of 2009 he returned to Tiscali, which in the meantime had significantly reduced in size, in order to relaunch the company and position it on the market of integrated communication of new media and new services Over The Top.
From May 2014 to May 2019 he was Member of the European Parliament for the Democratic Party, being part of the ECON Committee on Economic Affairs and substitute member of the ITRE Committee, on issues related to research, energy and industry. In addition, he held the position of Chairman of the Political Committee for the safety and human rights within the Union for the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.
In May 2019 he returned to Tiscali following a change in the shareholding structure and took up the position of Chief Executive Officer.
