About Us

The Montana Bar Fairies began with a simple idea: thank the people who choose not to drive drunk.

In March of 2023, our family lost Bobby, a vibrant 21-year-old, to a drunk driver. In the midst of grief, we found ourselves thinking about all the tragedies that might be prevented if more people made the decision to leave their car behind after a night out. We wanted to do something that encouraged that choice in a positive way.

So we started walking through parking lots late at night, looking for cars that had been left behind outside bars and restaurants. When we found one, we left a small gift card to a local coffee shop on the windshield — a simple thank-you to the person who chose not to drive. Our message was straightforward: Thank you for getting home safely. Coffee is on us in the morning.

What began as a small act of gratitude quickly resonated with people across Montana and beyond. Communities recognized that while laws and enforcement are important, culture plays a powerful role in shaping behavior. The Bar Fairies aim to shift that culture by celebrating the safe choice instead of only punishing the dangerous one.

Today, volunteers — our “Fairies” — go out in communities across multiple states, leaving thousands of thank-you notes each year. Every gift card placed on a windshield is both a token of appreciation and a reminder that someone noticed the responsible decision.

At our core, the Bar Fairies believe that positive reinforcement can change habits, save lives, and build stronger communities. By thanking people for doing the right thing, we hope to make leaving your car overnight not just acceptable, but normal.

One car, one coffee, one safe ride home at a time.
