The mission of CivicLab is to train, equip, and connect individuals committed to advancing social justice and the common good. CivicLab is a Black-led, Chicago-based community-focused “do-tank” dedicated to developing tools, leaders, and organizers for social justice, civic engagement, community involvement, and accountability within government and organizations. Our aim is to broaden Chicago’s and the world's civic imagination and foster a city and world characterized by justice and prosperity for all residents. Established in 2013, CivicLab operates as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Additional information is available at www.civiclab.us.
As a “do-tank,” CivicLab accelerates and enhances grassroots democracy, civic participation, and social justice initiatives through collaboration, community development, education, and innovation. We focus on research, educational programming, tool creation, and capacity building to reinforce grassroots democratic practices. By establishing sustainable infrastructure, we strive to create opportunities for equitable justice and democratic growth. Through our civic pedagogy, we provide leadership development, facilitate knowledge transfer, and support the pursuit of justice. Our goal is to inspire civic imagination for current and future possibilities within cities, towns, and villages.
CivicLab has developed a series of programs and services designed to address and transform toxic civic ecosystems into healthy, holistic environments. Our work is grounded in the Cycle of Liberation and the Ladder of Engagement. Our method is to: Investigate. Fabricate. Educate. Activate. Liberate. Repeat.
