Minnesota Valley's Green Crew: Youth Leading the Way in Conservation
We are the Green Crew, a youth-led environmental leadership and conservation service organization of the Minnesota Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. We are passionate about protecting our planet and making a difference in our communities.
Our Mission and Vision
Our vision is to cultivate a generation of environmental leaders who are knowledgeable, passionate, and ready to tackle the environmental challenges of our time. Our mission is to provide youth with the skills, experiences, and opportunities to lead and participate in meaningful conservation efforts.
Key Conservation Projects
1. Water Quality Monitoring
In partnership with Friends of the Minnesota River's River Watch Program, we monitor water quality in local rivers, lakes, and streams. We are expanding to full ecosystem management to ensure clean and healthy waterways.
2. Tree Equity
We reestablish urban forests in underserved communities. Our first large-scale effort is in Landfall, coordinating a 1:1 replacement of over 100 trees lost to the emerald ash borer. This project enhances urban tree cover and community well-being.
3. Habitat Restoration
Our Elm Tree Restoration project involved planting over 80 disease-resistant elm trees with the University of Minnesota, restoring vital ecosystems.
4. Leave No Trace
We conduct educational programs to promote environmental ethics and sustainable practices, teaching the principles of Leave No Trace to minimize human impact on nature.
Leadership Development
We gain leadership skills by planning, organizing, and executing conservation projects. Public speaking and effective communication help us advocate for environmental causes and inspire others.
