The Impilo Project is a community-based healthcare initiative working to make free, quality healthcare more accessible to underserved communities across Africa.

Born from a single outreach visit to Marconi Beam Primary School, The Impilo Project began when Dale and Carli Smith saw the urgent need for medical support among children and families. What started as one Community Health Day has grown into a long-term model of care built around early intervention, trusted local relationships, and consistent access to medical guidance.

Our approach is built on three pillars: Community Health Days, Community Health Workers, and Medical Technology.

Through quarterly Community Health Days, we bring doctors, nurses, pharmacists, Community Health Workers, volunteers, and partner organisations into underserved communities to provide large-scale screening, treatment, education, and referrals. These events are hosted in accessible community spaces such as schools and often serve hundreds of patients in a single day.

Beyond these events, trained local Community Health Workers form the backbone of our daily care model. Recruited from the communities they serve, they conduct household visits, provide health education, monitor chronic conditions, support maternal and child health, identify urgent needs, and connect patients to further care and support.

Technology strengthens every part of our work. Through digital health records, point-of-care diagnostics, referral tracking, follow-up reminders, and real-time programme data, The Impilo Project can monitor patients over time, identify health risks earlier, and improve decision-making.

Today, The Impilo Project combines community-based care, medical oversight, and accurate health data to deliver care closer to home while helping ease pressure on an overburdened health system.

The name Impilo means “to give life”, and that is the heart of our work.
