Theatre Works

Founded in 1980, Theatre Works is one of Australia's longest-running independent theatres and one of the country's most prolific producers and presenters of new Australian performance. For more than four decades, Theatre Works has been a vital launching pad for artists, championing bold ideas, creative risk-taking and diverse voices while continually evolving to meet the needs of Australia's independent theatre sector.

Our vision is to be Australia's leading home for independent theatre makers by investing in artists at every stage of their careers and creating opportunities for ambitious new work that reflects, challenges and reimagines contemporary Australia. We champion artistic excellence, cultural diversity and experimentation, providing a supportive platform for stories and voices that are often underrepresented on our stages.

Led by an Executive Director and supported by a highly skilled team spanning artistic programming, producing, production, marketing, venue operations and philanthropy, Theatre Works combines strategic leadership with deep industry knowledge. Our Board brings extensive expertise across governance, finance, law, business and the performing arts, ensuring strong organisational stewardship.

The recent expansion of our precinct, including the redevelopment of new accessible backstage facilities, rehearsal studios and artist amenities, alongside our Main Theatre, Explosives Factory and Blackbox Café, has created one of Australia's most significant independent theatre hubs. This unique combination of venues, infrastructure and specialist expertise enables Theatre Works to support artists from development through to production, presentation and touring.

Since 2017, Theatre Works has undergone significant organisational transformation. During this period we have:

Supported more than 3,500 artists and creative practitioners
Presented over 350 productions
Delivered more than 2,000 performances
Welcomed audiences exceeding 100,00
