Jacob Menick is a Member of Technical Staff at Thinking Machines Lab since February 2025, with prior experience at OpenAI from September 2022 to February 2025, where responsibilities included training models, leading the GPT-4o mini project, co-leading GPT-4o pretraining, and managing the post-training phase of the flagship model. Before OpenAI, Jacob worked at DeepMind as a Research Engineer from September 2015 to May 2022, leading projects on generative language models, including GopherCite and contributing to major LLM initiatives like Gopher, RETRO, and Flamingo. Jacob began academic exploration at Reed College, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics while engaging in research and web app development. Currently pursuing a PhD in Artificial Intelligence at UCL, Jacob has demonstrated a continuous commitment to advancing the field through a blend of research and practical applications.
