The New York Times Co.’s fourth-quarter profit fell 5.8%, to $75.1 million, compared to the same period a year ago, the company reported Thursday.

Revenue rose 2.2%, to $1.1 billion.

The company’s newspaper division, which includes The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The International Herald Tribune, reported a 1.2% increase in revenue, to $636.3 million. Advertising revenue was up 1.6%.

Circulation revenue increased 4.3%, to $169.5 million, primarily due to higher prices and increased home-delivery revenue.

The Times Co.’s broadcast division, which includes eight network-affiliated television stations, reported a 14.6% increase in revenue, to $121.9 million.

Revenue from the company’s other businesses, which include its Internet operations, rose 0.7%, to $329.8 million.

The company’s total operating costs and expenses rose 1.7%, to $933.7 million, primarily due to higher newsprint costs and higher compensation and benefit costs.

The Times Co.’s total operating profit fell 8.9%, to $167.2 million.

“The fourth quarter was a challenging period for the company,” Times Co. Chairman and CEO Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said in a statement. “Advertising trends were weak, particularly in the retail and help-wanted categories, and newsprint costs remained high.”

For the year, the Times Co.’s profit fell 15.5%, to $539.7 million, compared to 2005. Revenue rose 3.2%, to $4.4 billion.

The company’s newspaper division reported a 1.8% increase in revenue, to $2.5 billion. Advertising revenue rose 1.4%.

Circulation revenue increased 5.2%, to $633.3 million, primarily due to higher prices and increased home-delivery revenue.

The Times Co.’s broadcast division reported a 10.3% increase in revenue, to $451.2 million.
