Peter Parente

Director, Infrastructure at Thorn

Peter Parente has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and companies. Peter started as an intern at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in 2000. In 2001, they worked as an intern at National Instruments Corporation, where they developed a comprehensive LabVIEW test suite. Peter then served as an undergraduate research assistant at the RPI Center for Initiatives in Pre-College Education, where they developed LabVIEW solutions for remote experimentation and constructed Lego robotics applications for K-12 classrooms.

From 2002 to 2008, Peter was a Graduate Research Assistant at UNC Computer Science, focusing on making information more accessible to people with disabilities. During this time, they authored a dissertation and open sourced software.

Starting in 2006, Peter worked for IBM as a Senior Technical Staff Member, contributing to various components under Project Jupyter. Peter joined Valassis Digital in 2016 as a Senior Principal Software Engineer, collaborating with data scientists and software developers to transition prototypes to production code and develop data products. Peter also organized training sessions and contributed to open-source projects.

Currently, Peter is employed at Thorn, where they have held various roles. Peter started as a Data Engineer in 2019, then became a Manager of Infrastructure in 2020, and is currently serving as the Director of Infrastructure since February 2021.

Peter Parente completed their education with a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which they pursued from 2002 to 2008. Prior to that, they obtained their M.S. in computer science from the same institution between 2002 and 2004. Peter Parente began their academic journey by earning a B.S. in computer engineering and computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which they attended from 1998 to 2002. In addition to their formal education, Peter Parente obtained the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate certification from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in April 2022.
