David Nason

COO at TIAA

David Nason is Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for TIAA. He is responsible for leading a portfolio of TIAA complementary businesses and driving enterprise operational excellence.

David moved to this role in July 2021 after having served most recently as Chief Legal, Risk and Compliance Officer. He joined TIAA in 2019 as EVP and Chief Risk & Compliance Officer, and brought Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance together as a single, cohesive organization.

Prior to TIAA, David served for five years as President and CEO of GE Energy Financial Services, GE’s worldwide energy investing business with an asset base of $15 billion. Previously, he served as the Chief Regulatory and Compliance Officer at GE Capital, where he created a strategy, organization and operating framework for the $600 billion financial institution. In that role, he partnered with top executives to deliver risk management, capital planning, regulatory and legal affairs, and policy advocacy.

Before joining GE, David was the U.S. Senate-confirmed Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions for the U.S. Treasury, where he was instrumental in the government’s response to the 2008 financial crisis and served as lead advisor on banking, securities and housing finance regulatory matters. For his service, he received the Alexander Hamilton Award, the U.S. Treasury’s highest ranking honor for a public official.

Prior to the U.S. Treasury, David worked as a Commissioner’s counsel at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission and as an attorney at Covington & Burling. He has also served as Law Clerk to a federal court judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

David serves on the Board of Directors of TIAA Bank and on the Board of Advisors for the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from American University and a Juris Doctor degree from American University Washington College of Law.
