The TogetherUp Institute leverages behavioral science and practice-driven methodologies to build strong, connected communities throughout the US.

Its approach is three-fold:

(1) Relational Infrastructure:

We support communities in establishing civic "hub" networks — cross-sector collaboratives of local "hubs", or leaders, who build relationships and strengthen civic-skill capacity while co-creating solutions to shared challenges. These networks intentionally cultivate bridging and linking social capital at the local level — the two forms of social connection empirically shown to increase trust, social cohesion and agency, while enabling more effective and equitable collective action. Our approach draws upon evidence-based practices from intergroup contact research, organizational psychology, disaster response, and peacebuilding.

(2) Narrative Change:

We support coalitions, campaigns and community leaders with audience segmentation research, aspirational messaging strategies grounded in shared values and universal goals, ad creation and campaign implementation. Our approach is grounded in evidence-based best practices from communications and the behavioral sciences, and draw heavily from work on belonging, intergroup contact and targeted universalism.

(3) Field-Building:

We contribute to the broader ecosystem by developing tools and resources, advancing measurement frameworks, and convening learning communities that accelerate shared understanding in the fields of social connection, belonging, and pluralism. We help bring coherence to this emerging space and strengthen its impact through learning exchange, frameworks, and evidence dissemination.
