Coordination takes a team.
Torchbearer Community (TBC) is the public advocacy component of Torchbearer (TB) project, which aims to solve coordination challenges and put the world on track for a desirable future. We're developing sensible, repeatable, humanist methods to address humanity's biggest issues, starting with advocating for AI legislation and regulations that target existential risks posed by advanced AI.

The community was founded in 2025 by a small, passionate, diverse group of people who answered the call from Connor Leahy and Gabriel Alfour to form a citizen-driven, global organization. The first project: avoiding catastrophic outcomes (including extinction) from soon-to-be developed super-intelligent AI.
Lighting the flame
Connor and Gabe are business partners who have worked in the AI alignment space for years. They've published or contributed to well-received papers about AI existential risk, supported AI safety initiatives and activist groups, and directly presented their technical concerns to industry and political leaders across the globe.

However, they realized a critical gap persisted: meaningful engagement from citizens who could communicate AI risk from a personal perspective to legislators and policymakers who lack technical expertise. Their approach emphasizes that AI risks affect everyone, and we all share common stakes in ensuring its development serves humanity's best interests. Their goal is to start with this project and expand to other urgent issues in the near future.

The two also observed that many groups fell apart due to lack of structure, commitment, empowerment, or focus. So, they created a blueprint to avoid past pitfalls and distractions. The community will allow people, at scale, to spend a few hours a week taking positive actions in a coordinated way. TBC is growing by 20–30% every month thanks to the enthusiasm of its members.
