Trellus
Nilay Zan is an experienced educator with a diverse teaching background spanning multiple institutions. Currently serving as a 5th Grade Teacher at Trellus since October 2018, Nilay previously taught English Language Arts at LEARN Charter School Network for a brief period. Additional experience includes roles as Lead Teacher at Albany Park Community Center and Adjunct Instructor at both Midwestern Career College and SOLEX College. Internationally, Nilay has taught English at Brøndby Gymnasium and TED Koleji. Academically, Nilay holds a Master of Education in Community and Teacher Leaders from Northeastern Illinois University, alongside two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Urban Education and English/Language Arts Teacher Education, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering from Eastern Mediterranean University.

Trellus is a nonprofit that exists to empower immigrants, refugees, and underserved communities in Chicago to thrive by removing barriers and providing supports that create opportunities for life. Headquartered in West Ridge—one of Chicago’s major refugee settlement neighborhoods—we serve individuals and families representing more than 50 nations and ethnicities. Our culturally responsive, comprehensive services include trauma-informed behavioral health counseling, case management, health education, ESL and technology classes, career training and job placement, and other supportive services. We also operate Passages Charter School, a pre-K to 8 charter school in the Andersonville neighborhood keenly focused on the needs and experience of refugee families.
