Founded in May 2013 by Portia Richardson, Tumaini DC, Inc. exists to uplift and unleash the limitless potential of youth and families across the Washington, DC region.

Rooted in hope, healing, and cultural affirmation, Tumaini DC provides holistic, trauma-informed support services that address the social, emotional, academic, and leadership needs of young people—particularly those impacted by systemic barriers, poverty, and community violence.

Through healing-centered social-emotional learning, leadership development, workforce readiness, and global exposure experiences, we equip youth with the tools, confidence, and vision needed to thrive in school, career, and life. Our work extends beyond individual achievement, fostering resilient families, empowered leaders, and stronger communities.

Over the past decade, Tumaini DC has impacted over 30,000+  youth and families across the US and Ghana through direct programming, family engagement, professional development, and global leadership initiatives. Our work is trusted by schools, government agencies, and community partners because it is grounded in lived experience, cultural relevance, and measurable outcomes. From classrooms and community spaces to international service-learning experiences, Tumaini DC continues to cultivate confident, emotionally grounded leaders who are equipped to break cycles, reimagine possibilities, and lead transformative change in their communities.
