The Uganda Case Research Collaboration (UCRC) is a non-government organization
founded by researchers from Makerere University Uganda and Case Western Reserve
University, USA. It was established in 1989 as a collaboration to foster research and care in
Infectious Diseases like HIV, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis and many others. The collaboration has
also expanded its mandate to include Research in non-communicable diseases like cancer,
nutrition like severe acute malnutrition, body composition and genomic studies. UCRC
performs observational, interventional and community-based studies with intentions of
providing new knowledge on the prevention and management of diseases in Uganda and
globally.
UCRC has trained over 300 health care personnel who have emerged as independent
researchers and service providers in Uganda. Individuals have trained in laboratory services,
Immunology, Human medicine, public health, bioinformatics, responsible research conduct,
ethics, biomedical engineering and social work. The collaboration has published over 425
peer-reviewed collaborative publications and remains committed to continue scientific
dissemination and capacity building.
UCRC strives to bridge health inequalities through high quality research, training of local,
international and community staff, capacity building of individuals and strategic engagements
with stakeholders like the ministry of health, Makerere University and other health sector
players. UCRC undergoes rigorous internal and external audits, periodic review of its
strategic objectives and governance making it capable of handling and competing for
numerous grants.
