The SPHERES Research Unit brings together nearly 140 researchers from the University of Liège working in 24 research laboratories within 4 departments of the Faculty of Sciences:
- Astrophysics, Geophysics and Oceanography
- Biology, Ecology and Evolution
- Geography
- Environmental Sciences and Management

Being interdisciplinary, the SPHERES Research Unit takes its name from the different spheres that make up the Earth:
- Atmosphere (climate, composition, circulation, ambient air)
- Hydrosphere (watercourse, polar cap, aquifer, water quality)
- Biosphere (natural and semi-natural ecosystems, agriculture, biodiversity)
- Geosphere (geomorphology, geo-risk, surface process)
- Technosphere (geomatics, satellite positioning, remote sensing, smart cities, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable constructions)
- Anthroposphere (habitat, territory, economic geography, governance and citizen participation)

The research revolves around 4 axes linked to the different spheres and their interactions:
- Climate and ecosystems
- Sustainable habitat and territory
- Environmental Sciences and Risks
- Geomatics and Geographic Information Sciences

Our mission:
- Study the functioning and interactions of the different spheres.
- Study the dynamic relationship between man and his environment.
- Contribute to a sustainable and intelligent evolution of society by promoting a better understanding of the living environment of man and his interaction with the environment, both physical and socio-economic.
