Umbel is a Detroit-based studio founded to integrate acoustic performance into rooms, surfaces, and objects. We've designed for acoustics using wood, concrete, plants, plaster, glass, books, light fixtures, furniture, and of course felt, foam, and fiberglass. Umbel collaborate with architects, manufacturers, designers, and owners to shape intrinsically high-performing acoustic spaces.

The name Umbel is a botanical term for a pattern of blooming in which flowers propagate outward from a common point of origin. We are inspired by the untapped acoustic potential of architectural ornamentation, and the plants that underlie so much of it.
