Chief, Trade Gender and Development Programme

Fatma Gul Unal has extensive experience in economics and finance, beginning as a Stock Exchange Broker at Guven Menkul Degerler from February 1993 to February 1994. Unal's career includes significant roles at UNCTAD, serving as Chief and Senior Economist from July 2018 to May 2022, and currently as Chief of the Trade Gender and Development Programme from July 2024 to October 2025. Additional positions include a Visiting Assistant Professorship at Bucknell University, Assistant Professor of Economics at Simon's Rock College of Bard and Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and various roles within the United Nations organizations, including Senior Regional Advisor on Macroeconomic Policy at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and Economist at the United Nations Development Programme. Unal also worked as a Financial Market Dealer at Yapi Kredi Bank and contributed as a Research Associate at Hobson and Johnson Associates. Academic qualifications were obtained from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 2000 to 2007.
