John Scherer

John Scherer is a seasoned legal professional with extensive experience in higher education and government law. Currently serving as General Counsel at UNC Wilmington since December 2010, John manages the Office of the General Counsel and provides legal counsel on a wide range of issues, including student affairs, employment law, and compliance. Prior roles include Interim General Counsel and Associate General Counsel at the same university, as well as Assistant Attorney General for the N.C. Department of Justice, where John defended the UNC system and the Department of Correction in various litigations. John's legal career began in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps, supplemented by experience as Associate General Counsel for the Defense Commissary Agency. John holds a JD from the University of North Carolina School of Law and a Bachelor's degree in History from Davidson College.
