Brian Devaney

Principal at Underscore VC

Brian has a background in investing, operating, and strategy consulting. At Underscore VC, he focuses on B2B enterprise software that challenges legacy businesses and vertical-specific applications of AI and ML.

Brian is most interested in meeting founders with a deep understanding of the problems they’re solving paired with a clear vision for a better path forward. He enjoys connecting with entrepreneurs from the earliest conceptual stages of idea formation to talking through tactical operational hurdles.

He came to Underscore from First Round Capital, where he led diligence for investments such as UserLeap, Evolution IQ, XClaim, Siteline, and several unannounced investments across fintech, AI, and data transformation. Brian also supported portfolio companies and witnessed the growth of transformational businesses such as Looker, Superhuman, Flexport, Verkada, Labelbox, and Airbase on their path to building enduring technology companies.

Prior to First Round, Brian was hired by the founders of Strava to lead go-to-market for a new line of business. Brian began his career as an analyst at a leading internet bank and as a B2B marketing and sales consultant.

Brian earned his BA from the University of Vermont where he studied Economics, Business Administration, and Computer Science. He wrote his senior economics thesis on the development of the Internet and raced for the cycling team.
