Simon Topp

Simon Topp is a Machine Learning Engineer at Upstream Tech since May 2023, specializing in developing deep learning models for forecasting water resources. Previously, as a Machine Learning Specialist and Mendenhall Fellow at the U.S. Geological Survey from May 2021 to May 2023, Simon focused on enhancing deep learning models for water resource prediction and led a team in developing explainable artificial intelligence methods. Simon's career began as a Wildlife Biologist at NCRM, Inc., followed by roles such as Bat Radio-Tracking Technician and Research Assistant at institutions like Colorado Parks and Wildlife and UC Santa Cruz. Early career experiences also include conducting GIS work at Condor Country Consulting and data analysis at International Rivers. Simon holds a PhD in Remote Sensing and Hydrology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and advanced degrees in Environmental Policy and Environmental and Urban Studies.
