Jan Powell

Jan Powell has extensive work experience in various scientific and research roles. Jan is currently working as a Science Leader at ESR – Science and Research since July 2021, and previously held the position of Senior Scientist from August 2018 to July 2021 at the same company. In addition, Jan has served as the VP of Research at Upstream Medical Technologies Ltd since February 2021.

Prior to their current roles, Jan worked as a Health Protection Officer/Drinking Water Assessor at Northland District Health Board from January 2015 to August 2018. Jan also has experience in the pharmaceutical industry, having held positions at Shire Pharmaceuticals, Shire Human Genetic Therapies, and Shire HGT. At Shire Pharmaceuticals, they served as the Director, CNS Project Lead, Discovery Biology & Translational Research, overseeing the strategic direction and scientific leadership of the CNS Project. At Shire Human Genetic Therapies, Jan worked as the Director, Physiology, Nonclinical Development, responsible for delivering in vivo pharmacology and physiology studies. At Shire HGT, they served as the Director, Discovery Research, providing scientific expertise and identifying new opportunities for the Research pipeline.

Earlier in their career, Jan worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where they also served as the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program Director and coordinated dual degree programs with five professional schools on the University of Maryland campus.

Jan Powell completed their Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at The Johns Hopkins University from 2001 to 2002. Jan also pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Microbiology at the University of Otago, although the specific start and end years are unavailable.
