Joe Steyn

Principal Engineer - Embedded Design at UrtheCast

Joe Steyn has extensive work experience in the engineering field. Joe started their career in 1980 as a System Engineer at Kentron in South Africa. Joe then worked as a System Engineer at SIEMEMS, where they led a team in designing a tracking filter for a radar system. Joe also spent time at AMS (PTY) LTD as a Co-founder and Chief System Engineer.

In 1994, they worked as the Chief Engineer at Sea Hornet Marine Industries, where they designed a marine "black-box" system for BC Ferries. Joe then became the Owner and Chief Engineer of a yacht building company, where they designed and built a yacht.

Joe joined MDA in 1995 and held various roles such as a System Engineer and a Project Engineer/Chief System Engineer. Joe led the system engineering team for the delivery of an airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar system for the Brazil SIVAM program.

In 2002, Joe worked as a Project Engineer at CREO before returning to MDA in 2004. Joe contributed to the RapidEye Mission and the Ukraine Geostationary Communications Satellite projects. Joe served as a Principal Engineer at MDA from 2008 to 2010.

Since 2010, Joe has been working at UrtheCast as a Principal Engineer - Embedded Design, where they provide system engineering support and ensures the technical integrity of projects.

Joe Steyn received their Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa from 1974 to 1977. Joe later pursued a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Quantitative Analysis from the University of South Africa, which they completed from 1988 to 1990.
