Ian Payton has worked in various roles in the technology industry since 1990. From 1990-1992, they worked at BT in a Speech Synthesis Research role. From 1992-2001, they worked at Nokia Mobile Phones as a Software Engineer and at Philips as a Software Developer. From 2001-2012, they worked at Panasonic Mobile Communications Development of Europe, Ltd as an Assistant Chief Engineer and Technical Project Leader. From 2012-2013, they worked at Samsung Electronics Research Institute as a Mobile Software Security Architect. From 2013-2015, they worked at Cisco as a Security Consultant and Software Architect. From 2015-2017, they worked at The Open University as an Associate Lecturer. Since 2017, they have worked at Utonomy Ltd as a Product Architect and Product Security Architect.

Ian Payton obtained a Master's Degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of York between 1986 and 1990. In December 2022, they obtained a certification in Succeeding in Postgraduate Study from The Open University. In June 2020, they obtained a certification in ISO27001 Certified ISMS Foundation (CIS F) from IBITGQ.
