Based in the wild and unspoiled island of Lutruwita/Tasmania at the southernmost tip of Australia, Van Diemen's Band (VDB) has established itself as one of that state's leading performing arts companies.

Established in 2017 by Baroque violinist Julia Fredersdorff, VDB has grown from a single Baroque chamber orchestra into a family of ensembles, a recording label and a suite of education initiatives, all unified by the aim of creating extraordinary musical experiences for audiences.

As Australia's most adventurous early music ensemble — equally at home in the concert hall and at the edges of the repertoire — VDB delivers over 60 concerts each year to more than 12,000 attendees across Lutruwita/Tasmania.

VDB has performed for Ten Days on the Island, Dark Mofo and Mona Foma, toured nationally for Musica Viva Australia and internationally for Chamber Music New Zealand, and recorded for ABC Classic and the prestigious Swedish label BIS.

The hugely popular Lunchbox Concert series further expands VDB's reach, connecting audiences with local, interstate and international artists across a diverse range of genres and styles.

Always seeking to break new ground, VDB has collaborated with guests including French Baroque specialist Martin Gester, Persian/Afghani musicians Ensemble Kaboul and Tasmanian mandolin player Luke Plumb, and released the music video Song of the Birds in 2021.

In 2025, VDB launched its in-house, artist-led recording label as a creative home for an expanding discography and digital content — sharing music on its own terms, directly with listeners who care deeply about historically informed performance, artistic excellence and bold musical storytelling.
