Guthrie P. has a long and varied work experience. In 1995, they were an Undergraduate Student at The University of Arizona. During the summers of 1995 and 1997, they were an Undergraduate Research Assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 1999, they were a Post Doctoral Research Associate and Graduate Student at Rice University, where they conducted experiments using ultracold lithium atoms. In 2008, they were a Marie Curie International Post Doctoral Fellow at Laboratoire Charles Fabry, Institut d'Optique, Palaiseau, France, where they planned and performed experiments using optically trapped ultracold metastable atoms. Guthrie was also a Science and Language Editing Consultant at Institut Francilien de Recherche sur les atomes froids, Paris, France. From 2011 to 2020, they were an Expert R&D Researcher at Agilent Technologies, where they identified and implemented new technologies and processes for next generation instrumentation in key Agilent markets. Most recently, they worked to bring a low-cost, high-performance, external cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL) from concept to commercial production. Since 2020, they have been a Senior Scientist at Vector Atomic.

Guthrie P. received a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Arizona in 1999. Guthrie then went on to earn an M.S. in Physics from Rice University in 2004, followed by a Ph.D. in Physics from Rice University in 2007. In 2020, Guthrie P. obtained a certification in Silicon Photonics Design, Fabrication and Data Analysis from UBCx, an online learning initiative of The University of British Columbia through edX.
