James Penny has over 30 years of professional experience in a variety of industries. James began their career in 1992 as a graduate student at Caltech. In 1997 they became the Product Development & Design Manager at The North Face, Inc., where they managed the A5 rock climbing division and implemented a comprehensive R&D strategy. In 1999 they moved to Yakima Products as a Product Design & Development Manager, where they successfully launched a new product line of soft-goods. In 2006, they consulted for Idealab, where they conceptualized, designed, and manufactured a series of solar tracking PV modules. From 2008 to 2012, they worked for Simpson Lumber Company as a Marketing and Mechanical Design Consulting, repositioning the company as the West Coast resource for branded outdoor lifestyle redwood products and services. In 2017, they became the Capital Development Manager at Greenway Partners, a development group specializing in conceiving, testing, and implementing novel, financially profitable programs. In 2021, they joined Parallel Flight Technologies as the Manufacturing Operations Lead. Most recently, in 2022, they began working as a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer at Verdagy.

James Penny received their BS in Genetics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989. James then attended Caltech from 1993 to 1995 as a PhD Candidate in Molecular Biology. In May 2022, they obtained an Anti-Bribery & Anti-Corruption V2.02 2022 certification from Traliant.
