Yi Chen

Yi Chen has over 12 years of work experience. In 2020, they worked as a Machine Learning Engineer at Visla. From 2019 to 2020, they worked as a Data Scientist/Machine Learning Engineer at SUNMI Technology, where they drove down cost and launched three different IP Camera vision-based cashier auditing ML models, algorithms and services to prevent losses and detect abnormal cashier behaviors for smart stores. Yi also obtained very high precision/recall using BERT/Transformer based NLP models to extract information from receipt text with very low annotation requirements. In 2019, they were a Data Engineering Fellow at Insight Data Science. From 2013 to 2008, they were a Senior Analyst at Cancer Care Ontario, where they shortened cancer patients' diagnosis wait time by 20% and built a revolutionary data pipeline that enabled the first ever real time reporting system for CCO. Prior to this, they were a Senior Analyst at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).

Yi Chen obtained a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University between 1992 and 1997. Yi then went on to receive a Master's degree in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics from Concordia University between 2003 and 2005. In 2018, Yi Chen obtained certifications in Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Convolutional Neural Networks, Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter tuning, Regularization and Optimization, and Structuring Machine Learning Projects from Coursera. In 2019, they additionally obtained certifications in Deep Learning Specialization and Sequence Models from Coursera. Yi also has an Algorithmic Toolbox certification from Coursera.
