Vitess is a powerful, open-source database clustering system for horizontal scaling of MySQL. Originally developed at YouTube, it is now a CNCF-graduated project trusted by some of the world’s largest internet-scale companies to run mission-critical data infrastructure. Vitess seamlessly combines the reliability and familiarity of MySQL with the scalability and resilience of a cloud-native, distributed database architecture.

Built to solve challenges around massive scalability, availability, and performance, Vitess abstracts away the complexities of sharding, replication, failover, and query routing — making it ideal for teams operating large-scale, high-traffic applications.

With native support for Kubernetes and cloud environments, Vitess is the database backbone for leading organizations including GitHub, Slack, Square, and JD.com.
