John Dring

Advisor at Vitls

John Dring is the advisor at Vitls and was previously the Senior Vice President of Product Development at VitalConnect. John is responsible for development of the HealthPatch line of products, which includes hardware, firmware, mobile software, cloud software, and customer application teams. The solution consists of the HealthPatch sensor, mobile software relays for Apple iOS, Google Android and embedded, as well as a highly scalable cloud system hosted at Amazon Web Services (AWS). The HealthPatch sensor and accompanied system together bring an easy to use IoT type platform for many mHealth related markets.

The HealthPatch wearable sensor is a high quality medical device that detects ECG, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, body posture, step count, skin temperature, and fall detection, all in a comfortable form factor. The detection sensors require complex signal processing to recover highly variable signals across subjects to form robust sensors implemented in a power optimized fashion. Custom silicon was modeled, specified and prototyped using FPGAs to ensure first pass silicon success as well as to accelerate software and firmware development.

The HealthPatch sensor wirelessly connects to the mobile and fixed platforms using Bluetooth Low Energy/SMART. Software libraries are made available to our customers in the form of a software development kit (SDK). John Dring built the teams and management to create a business and customer driven, high quality, high paced, high output development environment with timely results. John also instituted the software development processes using a hybrid Agile method using scrums to meet the business demands of the software design. In addition, they led efforts to ensure the medical devices were designed in accordance with the well-known industry wide processes IEC13485 and the software development life cycle (IEC62304) to ensure high quality and traceable designs.

John Dring completed their undergraduate degree at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Computer Architecture.
