John Alper has a wide range of experience in research and development engineering. In 2020, they began working as the Head of Research and Development for VoltStorage, where they are responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight within R&D, as well as ensuring that the R&D priorities are aligned with the company's milestones and deliverables. Prior to that, they worked as a Research Engineer at Pioneer Astronautics in 2019, a Post Doctoral Fellow - Materials Engineering and Li-Ion Battery Research at CEA - Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives from 2015-2019, an Adjunct Faculty at Berkeley City College in 2015, an Adjunct Faculty in Chemistry at Contra Costa Community College District in 2014, and a Contract Engineer, Technical Operations at Millennium Pharmaceuticals in 2008. John also completed a PhD in Research and Development of nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage - batteries and supercapacitors, a Masters Degree in Research and Development of organo-silane thin film coatings for antimicrobial surfaces, and Graduate Student Instructor roles in Chemical Process Modeling and Control at UC Berkeley from 2008-2015.

John Alper received their B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island between 2002 and 2007. John then went on to pursue a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, which they completed between 2008 and 2010. John then continued their education at the same university, earning their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering in 2014.
