Bret Alvis has a diverse work experience in the field of anesthesiology and critical care medicine. Bret began their career as an Anesthesiology Resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in July 2009 and completed their residency in June 2012. Bret then served as the Chief Anesthesia Resident from July 2012 to June 2013.

Continuing their journey at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Bret Alvis pursued a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine from July 2013 to June 2014. Following this, they took on multiple roles, including Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (starting in July 2014), Director of the Vascular Waveform Analysis Group (starting in August 2019), Associate Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (starting in September 2020), and Associate Chair of the Sedation Committee (starting in July 2018).

In addition to their roles at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Bret Alvis also worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from October 2015 onwards, serving as an Intensivist and the Perioperative Care Service Medical Director.
