Scott Giles has a diverse work experience spanning several sectors. Scott began their career in 1983 as a Legislative Assistant for the U.S House of Representatives. Scott then worked as an Associate at Cassidy & Associates from 1986 to 1997. Following that, they served as a Professional Staff Member for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions from 1997 to 2001. Scott then became the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Committee on Science and Technology in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2003.
In 2003, Giles transitioned to the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, where they held various roles, including Vice President and Assistant Secretary from 2003 to 2013, and later as President and CEO from 2013 to the present.
Scott also served as the Chair of the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance from 2008 to 2009, providing independent advice and counsel on federal student financial assistance policy. Additionally, they were a Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont starting from 2017.
Giles has also been an active committee member, serving on the Select Committee on the Future of Public Higher Education in Vermont from 2020 to 2021. Overall, their extensive experience and leadership roles in various organizations reflect their expertise and dedication in the education and healthcare sectors.
Scott Giles has pursued education in various fields over the years. Scott has participated in executive education programs at the Harvard Business School. During this time, they studied finance, strategic perspectives in nonprofit management, performance management, and governance. Scott also holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia. Prior to that, they completed their Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Religious Studies and Psychology at Saint Lawrence University. Additionally, they obtained a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia. In terms of certifications, Scott has completed the "Mobilizing Your Nonprofit Board" program through the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education in March 2015.
