Jan Komsta

Vice President Of Engineering at Vulcan Forms

Jan Komsta has a strong background in engineering and robotics. Jan started their career with a summer internship at PG SYSTEMS Automatyka Przemysłowa in 2006, where they gained experience in designing and installing industrial automation systems.

Jan then moved on to Warsaw University of Technology in 2005, where they worked as a research student.

In 2007, Jan joined Bosch Rexroth, initially with a research role for their Master's final project, followed by an internship. Jan later became the Manager of New Technologies and Simulation, overseeing the implementation of prototype electro-hydraulic solutions and new drive and control technologies.

Jan then pursued a PhD through the Bosch PhD Program, focusing on robust control in electro-hydraulics. Jan'sresearch involved developing and implementing a novel nonlinear controller for servo-hydraulic systems utilizing high-response proportional valves and variable speed pump systems.

In 2015, Jan joined Google as a Senior Roboticist at Boston Dynamics. Jan was responsible for developing and testing hardware and controls software for the Atlas humanoid robot. Jan also designed and verified control algorithms and actuation concepts to improve energy efficiency and the quality of force and position tracking.

Jan's most recent position is as the Vice President of Engineering at VulcanForms Inc., a role they have held since 2017.

Jan Komsta obtained a Bachelor's degree in Automation Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology from 2003 to 2008. Jan then pursued a Ph.D. in Engineering with a specialization in Automatics and Robotics from Technische Universität Darmstadt, completing their studies from 2008 to 2011. In 2007, they also gained experience in Mechanical Engineering through a short-term program at Technische Universität Dresden.

In recent years, Jan has taken several certification courses to enhance their knowledge and skills. Jan obtained a Professional Certificate in Architecture and Systems Engineering: Models and Methods to Manage Complex Systems from MIT xPRO in March 2022. Prior to that, they acquired certifications in Model-Based Systems Engineering: Documentation and Analysis, Models in Engineering, and Architecture of Complex Systems from MIT xPRO in 2021. Additionally, Jan obtained various certifications from Coursera, including Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter Tuning, Regularization and Optimization, Structuring Machine Learning Projects, Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Initiating and Planning Projects, and Machine Learning, between 2019 and 2021.
