Martijn Smaling graduated in 1996 from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam with a degree in constitutional and administrative law as well as private law. They began their career in the administrative law section at Russell Advocaten in Amsterdam, then spent 20 years at DAS Rechtsbijstand, specializing in environmental law with a focus on agricultural administrative law. From August to December 2018, Martijn worked as a senior administrative lawyer at VvAA Legal, followed by a brief tenure at Meester Advocaten in 2019. Since November 2019, they have returned to VvAA Legal as a senior jurist in environmental law and are also the chair of the complaints committee for the municipality of Wijdemeren.
