Daniel Smith

Daniel Smith is an experienced legal professional specializing in regulatory issues related to vehicle safety and automated driving systems. Since May 2018, Daniel has served as the Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory at Waymo, where responsibilities include managing regulatory compliance and providing legal advice on federal and international regulations. Prior to this role, Daniel contributed to the Google Self-driving Car Project as a Senior Regulatory Advisor, offering insights on legislation affecting self-driving vehicles. Daniel's extensive background also includes serving as the Senior Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, where oversight involved federal vehicle safety programs and compliance enforcement. Earlier in the career, Daniel held leadership positions at the Federal Railroad Administration, managing safety standards and inspections. Daniel holds a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
