Thomas Zipfel serves as the Head of System Safety at Waymo since August 2020, previously holding the position of Lead Functional Safety Engineer. Prior to Waymo, Thomas worked at Continental from July 2009 to July 2020, where responsibilities included managing systems design and functional safety for automated driving systems, leading teams for various safety engineering projects, and developing processes to comply with ISO standards. Thomas also contributed to quality and safety management at multiple levels, including establishing teams in North America and Mexico. Initial industry experience includes roles at BMW Group and a brief stint in military service. Thomas holds a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Economics from HTWK Leipzig.
