Senior Backend Engineer, Data Platform at Webflow

kf Fellows has a diverse work experience spanning various roles in different companies.

They started their career as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Sam Houston State University in 2013, assisting with grading and instruction for undergraduate courses in discrete mathematics.

In 2013, kf Fellows also worked as a Data Engineer at Bizo, primarily remotely, where they focused on data engineering and backend engineering using Scala and Python on AWS.

They then became self-employed as a Freelance Data Engineer in 2013, taking on full-stack development projects using Scala, Python, JavaScript, and HTML/CSS on AWS, GCP, and Heroku. They also provided consulting services for code schools.

In 2014, kf Fellows joined Comcast as a Data Infrastructure Engineer, working remotely from San Francisco with a team in Philadelphia. They specialized in distributed systems, writing Scala and operating distributed NoSQL stores at scale.

In 2015, kf Fellows joined Simple Finance as a Data Infrastructure Engineer, responsible for internal analytics infrastructure, customer-facing data infrastructure, and core PostgreSQL databases. They contributed to the growth of the company from under 100 employees to over 400.

At Simple, kf Fellows also took on the role of a Site Reliability Engineer, building the centralized logging and observability platform using the ELK stack and integrating it with the data warehouse. They drove prioritization of backend technical debt to improve on-call experiences.

In 2017, kf Fellows became the Data Team Lead at Splice.com, where they built data and analytics pipelines on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) using BigQuery, Dataflow, Fivetran, MySQL, Python, and Go. They automated data consistency checks and created a company data dictionary.

From 2018 to 2020, kf Fellows held the position of Staff Infrastructure Engineer and Tech Lead at Ad Hoc LLC. They started a new team focused on infrastructure standardization and modernization for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

In 2018, kf Fellows also worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Turbine Labs, Inc, building tools for deploying and managing service meshes using Envoy, Kubernetes, Docker, and Go on AWS. They decided to explore civic tech after the company was acquihired into Slack.

From 2020 to 2022, kf Fellows worked at Netlify as an Engineering Manager, leading a team of backend engineers and cross-functional product teams.

Currently, kf Fellows is working at Webflow as a Senior Data Engineer and the Engineering Manager, Reliability. They manage the Site Reliability Engineering team and report up through the Infrastructure group. They joined the company at around 150 employees and have seen it grow to around 500 employees.

From 2020 to 2023, KF Fellows pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a focus on Business Analytics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

In 2013, KF Fellows attended Hackbright Academy for a Full-Time Program in Software Engineering.

Also in 2013, KF Fellows pursued Graduate Coursework in Mathematics at Sam Houston State University.

From 2011 to 2012, KF Fellows obtained a B.A. degree in Mathematical Science from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

From 2009 to 2011, KF Fellows completed a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Literature, Education at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

From 2007 to 2009, KF Fellows earned an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in Literature, Education from San Jacinto College.
