David Thomson

David Thomson has extensive work experience in the energy sector. David currently serves as the Vice President of Sub-Saharan Africa Research at Welligence Energy Analytics, where they lead the expansion of the company's upstream coverage into the SSA region. Their role involves analyzing well, field, play, basin, and company performance and activity. Prior to this, they worked as an Oil and Gas Consultant, undertaking various projects related to opportunity screening, company expansion, and tracking of oil and gas developments for different clients, including a start-up and an NGO.

Before joining Welligence, David had a long tenure at Wood Mackenzie, starting in 2005. During their time there, they held multiple roles, including Principal Analyst and Product Manager Exploration. In this role, they delivered global exploration analysis and content, developed products within the Exploration Service suite, and interacted with clients to understand their needs and identify new prospects. David also worked extensively in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, conducting financial modeling of key assets and companies and engaging with various stakeholders to gather information on production, costs, and strategies. Additionally, they served as an Analyst covering the Latin American upstream sector, with a focus on countries like Colombia, Venezuela, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Prior to Wood Mackenzie, David worked at Platts as a North Sea Reporter and European Product Market Reporter. In this role, they covered European spot gasoline and naphtha markets, setting daily price assessments and writing market reports.

David Thomson attended the University of St Andrews from 1990 to 1995, where they studied Philosophy. In 1997, they enrolled at the Journalism Training Centre and completed a NVQ Journalism degree in 1998, specializing in Journalism.
